Avatar Imports was founded while on a cross-country road trip back in 1990. Motivated by a love of music, travel and the bohemian lifestyle, we began traveling the world in search of interesting clothing and accessories to bring back to the States and sell at music shows and festivals. Kathmandu, Nepal became a favorite regular stop on our buying/design trips, and in late 1991 we thankfully met Jhaindra Ghimire. Who was working as a manager in a factory in Kathmandu at the time.
As our business grew, so did our awareness of the difficult living and working conditions in Nepal. Realizing that we had the power to improve those conditions we partnered with Jhaindra, who now owns his own factory in Kathmandu, and we all agreed it was time to adhere to the principles of fair trade and give our employees an opportunity to rise up out of poverty and enjoy an improved standard of living and quality of life.
